Devote yourself

Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture. (1Timothy 4:13)

In this age of short, fast moving soundbites, preachers run the risk of beginning their messages with quick references to Scripture or read one or two verses to give their sermon some credence.

Recently, Tony Ling was with us here at All Nations. He began his message by reading Ephesians chapter one: all of it. Here is the recording: sit down, close your eyes and let the power of the Word of God, as it is read, penetrate the deepest parts of your spirit.

The Spirit of faith

It is written: 'I believed; therefore I have spoken.' With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak. (2Corinthians 4:13)

Yesterday at All Nations I spoke from this verse, about the Spirit of faith. We must remember that faith is not a human originated technique; it's not a magic formula. Faith is not based in the natural senses of natural people. Faith is supernatural; it is a spiritual activity and reality. Faith lives and thrives in the realm of the unseen. It is based in the nature of the invisible God. The supernatural is the fuel of faith, the oxygen of faith. Faith is the realm of the Holy Spirit. Your life of faith depends on your life in the Holy Spirit.

Focus of faith

In the latest phase of our ministry on faith here at All Nations, we have been emphasizing the importance of knowing who Jesus is. That might sound obvious but without him there is no ground for our faith.

I covered this again last Sunday with reference to the blood of Jesus: what happened when he shed his blood and what that means for effecting its power today.

Flight 447

I'm sure you will have heard of the recent tragedy of Air France Flight 447 that went down in the Atlantic a couple of weeks ago. 288 people lost their lives. One of the victims was an eleven year old boy, Alexander Bjoroy.

Alexander's grandfather, Bill Dougill, is a member of All Nations Church. Bill loves the Lord very much; he recently turned eighty and gave testimony of the goodness and faithfulness of God to him over his life. Naturally, Bill was devastated by the loss of his only grandson; nevertheless, the Sunday after the crash, Bill was in our Sunday meeting. He told me before the meeting that he needed to be at home with his family - the church. That Sunday I spoke on having a faith that perseveres; when I had finished I invited Bill to come forward, because he had told me he wanted to give a testimony about what had happened.

Faith speaks

We had a remarkable meeting All Nations yesterday. Recently we decided to change some things around concerning the way we meet on a Sunday. We now have the ministry of the Word first; then we come back about fifteen minutes later for whatever the Holy Spirit guides us into. Yesterday I was teaching on having a speaking faith (the theme of all our ministry for 2009 is the just will live by faith). 

The second part of our meeting opened with a wonderful testimony from a young man in our church called Jonathan Gallimore. Just over a year ago Jonathan was diagnosed with leukemia, which he has been battling against ever since. He has made great progress and is recovering. Jonathan and his parents, David and Katherine, all spoke powerfully of how the Lord has worked for good in this bad situation. Their faith spoke.

Getting started

This year at All Nations in Cardiff, the theme of our ministry is The just will live by faith. So, whoever preaches or teaches, all our children's and youth ministries, however they communicate it - everything will be to do with living by faith. We began last week and you can follow the ministry with us. Whenever possible it will be available from our web site and by podcast through iTunes. More wisdom

Just a reminder of the excellent weekly teaching series on Proverbs that's available for download from the All Nations Church site or as podcasts from iTunes. Recorded live, each session lasts a maximum of thirty minutes, with speakers such as Dianne Aubrey, David Shutt, Carol Jones, Rob Sherwin and me.
